GIG GUIDE

MUSIC

HEALTH (USA)
(Noise-Rock)
Radio 1 presents HEALTH, an American noise-rock band from Los Angeles. They been described as having “artfully crafted noise and raw synth, haunting monotone vocals, and drum skills that are borderline insane.”
Their unusual sound is partly due to their use of the Zoothorn (a weird mix of microphone and guitar pedal).  Rather than a gimmick, it gives HEALTH’s tracks “a kind of fibrillating metallic veneer that eludes most rock bands”.
The band describes their lyrics as being “purposely kept vague for the listener... We aren’t just interested in being a noisy screaming band.”
In 2007 their Crystal Castles reached number 9 on the UK indie singles chart, in 2008 HEALTH opened for Nine Inch Nails, and The Phoenix named them the Best New Band from California. Guardian Unlimited and The Irish Times has also chosen HEALTH songs as pick of the week
On the back of their 2009 album, Get Colour, HEALTH is playing as the lead international act at this year’s OUSA Ori10. They are also rumoured to be debuting a clothing line in early 2010 – maybe we’ll be the first to see it?

PunkFest OP10: Infinite Justice
(Punk)
This year’s OP PunkFest is played by local punk band Infinite Justice. They’re a proper old-school punk with hints of rock-and-roll. Infinite Justice plays a mix of witty originals and covers of old-school punk standards, like the Ramones’ Hey Ho – Let’s Go. Infinite Justice has been playing for five or six years, and their first paid gig was right here at Otago Polytechnic. Get your pogo on. Free entry. Presented by OPSA

The 3Ds
(Alternative / Pop / Rock)
Not part of the official Ori programme but  a Radio 1 birthday bash. The 3Ds are a significant Dunedin band who have not played together regularly since the ‘90s. Mostly refugees from other Dunedin Sound bands, The 3Ds were an alternative pop/rock band formed in the late ’80s. They have played with Nirvana, U2 and Pavement. The 3Ds have toured the USA, UK and Australia, and have been top picks by both Melodymaker and NME.
Every student who was remotely cool in the early ’90s had their Hellzapoppin album. If you’re too young to remember you’ll probably still know some of their tracks Outerspace, Hey Seuss, Spooky or Animal from various NZ films, TV ads or retro Kiwi hits hour on C4. An opportunity not to be missed. Saturday 20 February at Sammy’s. Thanks Radio 1.

Killa Queenz (Australia)
(Hiphop)
KillaQueenz are one of the most talented hiphop acts coming out of Australia. Renowned for high energy shows, Kween G and Belizean Bombshell originate from Uganda and Belize. They draw inspiration from their homelands, and bring a fresh sound to the hiphop scene.
They first met at the Olympic Games in 2000 whilst performing individually, and KillaQueenz was created. They have become well-known in the Australian hip-hop scene through their numerous gigs, and via Kween G’s Friday night show on Alchemy Radio. KillaQueenz have a large following and a reputation for being “…one of the ultimate crowd party rockers”. Keep it locked for KillaQueenz. Presented by OUSA

They also toured throughout the country performing at secondary schools to fundraise for the Samoan Tsunami. Presented by OUSA

The Datsuns
(Rock)
The Datsuns are a rock band from Waikato. However, they’re still cool. Damn cool.
The Datsuns shot to international fame after the UK music press hailed them as “the future of rock”. Describing their style as “We’re just a rock-and-roll band playing music the way we want to do it”, The Datsuns have played alongside Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson, Korn and Disturbed. They have recently returned from touring Europe last September.
The Datsuns are a “must-see” band, so don’t miss them at Ori10 – because they’ll cost three times as much next time you get a chance. Presented by OUSA
Read an interview with The Datsuns’ X on page 20.

The Mint Chicks
(Rock / Punk)
The band refer to their style of music as “troublegum”, and have been referred to as anything from neo-punk to schizo-pop. Throw the Ramones, a bit of Buzzcocks, a few slices of Green Day in a blender, and season with some Toy Love, and you’re coming close to the Mint Chicks’ sound.
They’re a foursome from up north and have won five Tui awards. The Mint Chicks are famous for their exciting live performances, where they have been known to climb PA stacks, hang from lighting rigs, destroy guitars, engage in self-harm, and even attack the stage with a chainsaw.
They list their turn-ons as: comic books, the Buzzcocks, Public Image Ltd, Grand Theft Auto, A Clockwork Orange, Refused, Devo, At the Drive-In, Flying Nun Records, the Beach Boys, Naked Lunch, pro tools, Black Sabbath, psychedelia, Roy Orbison, and Slayer ringtones. Presented by OUSA

MORE MUSIC

Kidz In Space
(Hiphop)
Officially Kidz In Space “is a three-piece band who’ve been searching for this new music, and they’ve come back down to Earth to give it to us.” First witnessed by an earthling audience at last year’s Big Day Out, Kidz in Space are a three-piece we know nothing about other than that their video Downtime on YouTube is described as “Awesome” – and we agree and see why they are a popular download. If they’re even half as good as their vids they should be well worth seeing live. Presented by OUSA

(Rock)
Midnight Youth formed in early Rockquest days. They have toured with INXS and opened for INCUBUS. Their debut album The Brave Don’t Run entered the NZ charts at number 2 last year; hits include The Letter and All On Our Own. F in Math
(Electronica / Alternative / Pop)
F in Math is former Mint Chick Michael Logie’s solo project. He describes his sound as “electronic music and sort of rock music”, and says he tries “to flirt with, but not to commit to any particular sub genres of electronic music, or rock music... it’s supposed to be the musical and lyrical equivalent of the inside cover of a dropout’s math book, covered in drawings and stuff.” Presented by OUSA

Made in China is a local rock group of mostly senior music students. In a few years of regular shows Made in China have built for themselves a reputation as one of Dunedin’s most entertaining live acts.
